How to unlock Your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs provide superior convenience and performance to a manual key. However, they do require batteries that eventually wear out over time and will need to be replaced. If your Volvo key fob is beginning to malfunction intermittently, it's a good sign that the battery is depleted and will need replacement in the near future.

Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. First, you must locate a clean work surface to perform the process. Lay out all the tools that you'll require. Find the battery hatch and ensure it is set to "open." Make use of a flathead screwdriver, coin, or a similar tool to make the hatch wide. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting it on the side that is closest to the key-ring loop. Use rubber gloves to shield the clips and electronic contact surfaces.

After the battery has been removed, place the new one into its socket. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it is placed in all of the clips. Then slide the cover downwards and towards the key-ring loop until it becomes loose and then slides off. Then, take off the cover to reveal the key blade that is hidden within. This will be used to unlock your car from the driver's side door in the event that the key fob battery is dead or lost.

How to Start Your Vehicle

The majority of modern vehicles come with key fobs that perform more than just unlock or lock the doors. They also have useful functions, such as summoning and auto-parking the vehicle. In fact, the latest Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine with its key fob buttons. But what exactly is it that works?

First, find a clean surface on which you can lay out all the required items for this project. Then lay the fob on the surface with its Volvo logo facing upward. Next utilize a flathead screwdriver or coin or similar tool to switch the battery hatch from the open position. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces with your tools. This can cause the fob's mechanism to stop working properly.

Once the hatch is open, slide the battery into its socket and make sure it is properly seated with the positive (+) side facing up. Once the clips are fixed, replace your battery cover, and reassemble your fob.

Pressing the unlock button one time will disengage the alarm and open the driver's door. Pressing it again will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to open the windows during the hot days or to let fresh air in before getting behind the wheel. And if you're looking for more, the key fob can also be used to turn on ERS, which can start the climate control system in your vehicle and then warm or cool it to the preferred temperature settings when the vehicle is at a stop.

How do I change the battery?

If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle like it used to it could be time to change the battery. Changing the battery is fairly easy and requires only an ordinary screwdriver with a flat head or plastic pry bar tool. First, locate the small slot where the backup / emergency key for ignition made of metal used to be. Insert the blade of a screwdriver or a prybar tool into this slot, and then gently pull the rear of the fob. Once you have opened the fob, you can locate and remove the CR 2032 3V battery. Place a new battery in its place, and snap the fob back together.

Note: Some older Volvo models have another type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 tenths of a millimeter thinner than a CR2032 battery, which means you'll need to be cautious about the placement of the replacement.

The security of a key fob is essential for both safety and convenience, so be sure you follow these guidelines when changing your Volvo's battery.
